Work will shortly begin to clear waste which has been illegally fly-tipped on the former LG access road in Coedkernew.

Following a tender process carried out in September, the council has awarded a contract to Newport-based GD Environmental to carry out the work which is expected to begin this month.

The move comes after two Cardiff men caught illegally dumping waste on the site were successfully prosecuted and fined at Newport Magistrates’ Court.

The council has also issued a further five fixed penalty notices for fly-tipping offences and seized two vehicles involved in offences.

Tyres and hazardous materials will be removed from the site first. Other waste will then be removed and taken away for sorting so that as much can be recycled as possible.

Enhanced security and CCTV will remain in place at the site once it has been cleared to prevent further illegal fly-tipping.

The council is also working with a local community group, Friends of the Road to Nature, on plans to further improve the area once the clearance has been completed.

Councillor Roger Jeavons, deputy leader of the council and cabinet member for city services, said: “I’m pleased to announce to clear this site will start very soon.

“We know that clean streets are a priority for the people of Newport. We share their frustration at seeing criminals illegally dump waste on our streets.

“This action reaffirms our commitment to keeping our streets cleaning. Along with our recent work to identify and prosecute fly-tippers, it shows that we will not tolerate these acts in our city.

“We also want the community to reclaim this space once it has been cleared. To that end, I’m delighted that the Friends of the Road to Nature group has already adopted the space. I look forward to seeing the plans for further improvements to the site.”
