Christmas shoppers in Merthyr Tydfil have the added incentive again this year of free weekend town centre parking, starting on Saturday (13 November).

The County Borough Council and Big Heart of Merthyr Tydfil Business Improvement District (BID) are encouraging people to take advantage of free parking at all car parks in the centre on Fridays and Saturdays – Sunday is already free – until 3 January 2022.

Cabinet Member for Finance and Governance Cllr Andrew Barry said: “Our shops and town centre businesses are still recovering from the effects of the pandemic lockdowns and need all our support for a successful Christmas period.

“By not having to worry about how long they can spend in the town centre before returning to their vehicles, shoppers can relax and enjoy our extensive and diverse range of shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants.”

BID Chair Huw Williams said: “The Big Heart of Merthyr Tydfil is delighted to have secured free weekend parking on Fridays and Saturdays from 13 November to Monday 3 January.  We see this as a huge positive and will encourage seasonal shopping and visitors to the town.”

Drivers who usually pay by mobile phone will have to switch to the PayByPhone app from next Monday, 15 November, or they will get a parking ticket. The app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store.
