RCT Council has started work to deliver a Welsh Government-funded drainage scheme near Heath Terrace and Llanwonno Road in Ynyshir – to upgrade a culvert inlet and increase its resilience during heavy rainfall.
The scheme started on site from Monday, November 29, utilising £127,500 secured from Welsh Government through funding available for small-scale drainage works – complementing the Council’s own contribution towards the £204,000 scheme. The Council has appointed Hammond (ESC) Ltd as the contractor responsible for delivering the scheme, lasting around 12 weeks.
Upcoming work will increase the capacity of the existing inlet and improve its resilience – upgrading the existing natural channel with a concrete-lined replacement. This will reduce the rate of scour and the amount of debris in the watercourse, while increasing the structural stability of the channel banks.
The Council’s contractor does not require traffic management for this scheme, and it is unlikely to cause significant disruption to the local community.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “The Council has welcomed important Welsh Government funding to deliver this work near Heath Terrace in Ynyshir, which is the latest scheme to help protect our communities from flooding and the effects of climate change. Replacing the natural channel at this location with a more resilient structure will increase the capacity of the local watercourses during inclement weather.
“The upcoming works represent the third targeted scheme to be undertaken in the area recently, both in response to Storm Dennis and to improve flooding resilience. In July and August, the Council carried out lining works and drainage improvements at Standard View, while significant repairs to a series of river walls near Cross Street and Ynys Street were completed this month.
“The scheme near Heath Terrace is now underway and will be completed over the next 12 weeks, with minimal disruption expected for residents. We will continue to seek external funding for drainage schemes such as this, in order to further contribute to our own significant investment in this priority area.”
