Swimming pools in both Pyle and Pencoed are celebrating 40 years of service this November by offering discounted memberships.

The pools, now run by Halo Leisure, both opened in 1981 at a time when no one had ever heard of Zumba, Aqua Aerobics or Boxercise.

They have even been used as training facilities for Olympians with one of Britain’s most celebrated triathletes, Helen Jenkins, using the pools on her way to two Triathlon World Championship wins as well as three Olympic Games representing Team GB.

Now, both facilities are vital to ensuring more local people get active more often and have become more accessible than ever to members of the community through installation of hoists for those with mobility difficulties and exercise classes suitable for people with conditions such as MS.

Swimming teacher Caitlin Jones, Pyle Pool General Manager Natalie Jones, Council Leader Huw David, Councillor Dhanisha Patel, Councillor Jane Gebbie and Halo Partnership Manager Simon Gwynne celebrate Pyle Swimming Pool’s 40th anniversary.

Funded by the local authority and Sport Wales, ‘pool pods’ were installed at Pyle Swimming Pool which allow new wheelchairs provided as part of the pod to be lowered into the pool for easy access and to make swimming more enjoyable.

Mike Thomas, General Manager at Pencoed Swimming Pool, said: “Since Pencoed Swimming Pool officially opened its doors to the public on 14 November 1981, it has really made a difference when it comes to helping local people get fit and active.

“The pool has registered an estimated four-million attendances and we estimate that the combined distance swam during this time will be in excess of three-million kilometres – equivalent to swimming around the World 75 times.

“And more recently, since reopening back in May the swimming pool has delivered over 14,000 swimming lessons, 19,891 public swims and 4,237 gym workouts.”

To celebrate four decades of service, both Pencoed and Pyle swimming pools are offering special offers throughout November including membership for as little as 40p.

The swimming pools in both Pyle and Pencoed have provided excellent and accessible swimming and gym facilities to those in the community for four decades now.

Halo Leisure work extremely hard at both pools to ensure they are offering the best possible service to those who need it and always have an eye to the future to explore ways that they can enhance what’s on offer.

Councillor Dhanisha Patel, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Future Generations
