The RSPCA is appealing for information after the body of a headless cat was found in Dinas Powys.
A homeowner made the distressing discovery on a pavement outside her house on Monday (13 December). The torso of the black cat – believed to be an adult female – was completely intact and there was no sign of blood, although the head of the poor animal was missing and hasn’t been found.
A family living nearby – who believe the cat is their pet – took her to a vet, who confirmed that it looked like the head had been cleanly cut from the body. There were no other injuries to suggest that she may have been involved in a road traffic accident or attacked by a wild animal.
RSPCA animal rescue officer Izzi Burston, who is investigating, said: “I’d like to extend my sincere sympathies to the people who believe this is their pet, and to thank the homeowner who very kindly took action after making this extremely upsetting discovery.
“Sometimes in cases like this, the animal has died from other causes, such as being hit by a vehicle, before a wild animal finds it and takes the head. However, like the vet that examined the cat’s body, I believe the cut to the head has been cleanly made, so I am currently not ruling out other possibilities.
“We believe the same cat was seen alive in the area the night before, but CCTV in the local area is currently being checked, and I’m also appealing to anyone else who may have information about this incident to come forward.
