A Cycle Ready for Spring campaign – designed to encourage more people to cycle and to get their bikes road-ready in time for Spring – is coming to Cardiff.

Run by Cardiff Council and its partners, the family-friendly events will have entertainment, live music and cycle-kit giveaways. Residents can get their bikes checked over by professionals, have small repairs done, and get them security tagged by South Wales Police at four, free events held in Grangetown, Canton, Splott and the city centre.

Cllr Caro Wild, Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport and Planning, said: “More and more people are cycling in Cardiff and with Spring just around the corner it’s a good time for people to get their old bikes out of the garage.

“During the pandemic the council has been working hard building a series of new segregated cycleways and infrastructure improvements and we want people to come along to get their bikes ready to go and to see just what’s on offer for cyclists across the city nowadays.

“These will be fun events for all the family with lots of entertainment and giveaways and, as well as ensuring your bike is road worthy and safe, you’ll be able to learn about all the new cycleways, how they work and view maps of all the routes.”

The four events will take place at the following locations between 11am and 3pm:

    • Saturday, February 12th– Grange Gardens.
    • Saturday, February 19th– Victoria Park.
    • Saturday, February 26th– STAR Hyb.
    • Saturday, March 5th– Cardiff Castle.

A variety of activities will take place, including:

    • Dr Bike will provide free maintenance checks and small repairs delivered by Cardiff Cycle Workshop.
    • South Wales Police will be in attendance to offer free, security marking.
    • Pedal Emporium will be providing cycle-powered fun and games including a cycle-powered bubble machine. The faster you cycle the more bubbles you’ll create.
    • Live music will be playing including Wonderbrass at Grangetown Pavilion and Cardiff Castle, Capra Mamei at Victoria Park.
    • Ovo bikes will be supporting the event by ensuring that the bike stations closest to these events are up and running and well supplied with bikes, with 50 free vouchers available at each event, which gives 30 minutes of free cycling.

Cllr Wild said: “We want to create a real family atmosphere at these events so that residents can come along and enjoy the activities and the offers. Free goody bags will also be available for those who take part with branded T-shirts, seat covers, safety tabards and bike lights available.”
