A scam phone caller has asked a Powys pensioner to make a £100 payment over the phone, so that they could receive a £6,000 rebate on their Council Tax.

It is the latest of several attempts made to con residents out of their money, that the county council has been made aware of, in recent weeks.

These calls are not being made by Powys County Council staff and anyone contacted in this way should not give out any personal or financial details. And should not make any type of payment over the phone.

If in doubt, residents can always check with the council to see if a call about Council Tax is genuine.

    • Phone: 01597 827463 (office opening hours 9am – 1pm Monday – Friday)
    • Email: [email protected]

If you receive a cold call:

    • Don’t give out any of your personal details
    • Don’t give out any of your bank details
    • Don’t let on that you live alone

You can report fraud or cybercrime to Action Fraud online, at any time: https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/reporting-fraud-and-cyber-crime

    Or call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040, Monday to Friday, 8am – 8pm.

If you, or someone else, is in immediate danger or risk of harm dial 999.

Powys residents who choose to ‘Go paperless’ with their Council Tax bill, can also check the status of their account online at any time.
