Risca Community Comprehensive School will hold a dog walk at Cwmcarn Forest to raise funds for its Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) centre.

The walk will take place on Sunday, April 3, and coincides with World Autism Awareness Week.

All are welcome to the event, which begins at 10.45am at Cwmcarn Forest car park.

The ASC centre at the school currently has 21 pupils, aged between 11 and 16, who receive support and learn key skills.

Funds raised at this years’ event will go towards developing their nurture garden ,a seating area, plant seeds and to help complete the calming area in the nurture garden. The funds will also support the ‘ci’ project which supports pupils with learning outside.

Risca Community Comprehensive School head teacher John Kendall said: “I’m delighted members of our community have organised Walkies for Autism again after a two year break due to the Covid situation. It’s good to see this back on the school calendar. Thank you to everyone involved.”

Nick Rutter, who is organising the event, said: “This is the third Walkies for Autism event at Cwmcarn Forest. The aim of the walk is to have fun, raise funds and raise awareness during Autism Awareness Week.”

Principal teacher at the ASC centre, Deb Howells, said: “It’s amazing to see the whole school come together for the pupils in the ASC centre.

“One strength of the school is the awareness and support of pupils with autism. So many parents and students support us and mainstream pupils talk to and engage with the ASC Centre pupils.”
