An oak tree on land between Coed Mawr and Andover Close has had branches removed without permission, action that is likely to kill it.

It is believed this took place on the afternoon of Sunday, February 5.

The tree was worth up to £28,000, according to Capital Asset Value for Amenity Trees (CAVAT), the system used to make such calculations.

This matter has been reported to the Police and the Council will be actively looking to start legal proceedings against anyone involved.

A nearby ash tree with a value of around £900 also appears to have been very seriously damaged.

Cllr Mark Wilson, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood and Building Services, said: “This is a disgraceful act of criminal damage and something we are not prepared to tolerate.

“I’m sure most residents share my disgust at what has happened to this tree, but it’s important that those responsible, or anyone else considering similar action, also realise that this is completely unacceptable.

“We are aiming to take the strongest possible action against individuals found to have played a part in this incident and I would encourage anyone with information to come forward.”

Details, including images and video footage, can be reported to South Wales Police online referencing crime number 2300039760

If residents have an issue with a council-owned tree in the Vale of Glamorgan, they should raise their concern via the Council’s online reporting system and not take action themselves.
