THE Vale of Glamorgan Council is investing more than £2 million to upgrade the roof and external cladding at Penarth Leisure Centre.

Work on the project will take place in three phases over a period of months to minimise the impact on leisure centre users.

It will bring the building, managed by Legacy Leisure, up to modern standards of thermal insulation, meaning heat is better retained.

More daylight will also be able to enter, with improvements made to the roof lights to increase performance.
Contractors will be on site from early next week to install scaffolding, fencing and hoarding.

The leisure centre will operate as normal for the time being, though there will be some impact on the swimming pool, gym and sports hall as the project progresses.

Work is currently taking place to ensure the service offered to customers does not reduce as a result of this.

Cllr Gwyn John, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Wellbeing, said: “The Council has committed a substantial sum of money for extensive improvement work to be carried out at Penarth Leisure Centre.

“The roof and external cladding will be completely replaced to offer users a modern, functional facility to enjoy.
“Health and Wellbeing remains a top priority and we hope, once the project is completed, leisure centre users will have an even better space in which to be active.

“Disruption will be kept to a minimum with details of how facilities will be affected to follow in due course.”

Nic Beggs, Contract Manager for Legacy Leisure, said: “We are pleased to see the continued investment from the Vale of Glamorgan Council in its leisure centres.

“Although the project will not see an immediate impact on the service we offer at Penarth, the phased works will have an impact and we are now working closely with our council colleagues to continue to offer a robust leisure service while these improvements are made.”
