‘Merthyr Forever’, a song written especially for the Borough, rang out across social media channels on Friday February 9th.

Welsh Music Day was celebrated across Merthyr Tydfil, an event which is a National celebration, saw schools across Merthyr Tydfil celebrating through a variety of activities.

Troed y Rhiw Primary School celebrated the day through learning the ‘Hei Mistar Urdd’ song as well as dancing and singing along to some of their favourite songs! In Foundation learning, the children had lots of fun in their Welsh Music Disco!

There was more fun at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Santes Tudful, who held a music concert with soloist Sophie Jones and a silent disco. To enhance the use of the language, they collaborated with Dowlais Primary School which saw both schools combine forces to practice and strengthen their Welsh language skills with their Criw Cymraeg.

BCA St Mary’s Primary campus celebrated the day through exploring various Welsh songs and learning about traditional Welsh instruments. Nursery children listened to Welsh songs and performed the song ‘Lliwiau Enfys’ to their school.

The Merthyr Tydfil Music Service used the opportunity of the National Plans ‘First Experiences’ to teach children across Cyfarthfa Park Primary and BCA St Illtyds some Welsh Music to play on the recorder and the violin.

Merthyr College celebrated the day by hosting a performance from local artist Eädyth Crawford.

Welsh Music Day provides a Welsh Language cultural celebration to the children and young people of Merthyr Tydfil and gives people the opportunity to use the language throughout the borough.

Welsh Language Champion Cllr Michelle Symonds commented, “These celebrations are an excellent opportunity to showcase the beauty of Welsh music in schools and settings, and to promote the language across Merthyr Tydfil. Llongyfarchiau pawb to everyone who celebrated the event”.
