Neath Port Talbot Council is set to launch its new Foster Plus Step Down scheme, designed to support the transition of young people in care from children’s homes to local foster families.
Existing and prospective foster carers are invited to attend a drop-in informational event at the Gwyn Hall in Neath on Monday 19th February 2024, from 10:30 to 14:30. Attendees will have the opportunity to speak and ask questions to those directly involved in delivering the scheme.
The scheme targets children and young people who are ready to move to a foster home but currently live outside the area. These children often require a higher level of care and support due to experiences such as difficult parenting, exposure to domestic violence, substance misuse, or neglect, resulting in complex physical, emotional, and behavioural needs.
Carers participating in the scheme will benefit from enhanced training and specialist support, including:
- Access to an on-call system for advice and assistance.
- A dedicated social worker providing regular support.
- Involvement with an experienced therapeutic team, including a psychologist, specialist social workers, and outreach workers.
- Guidance in understanding the trauma experienced by the child in care.
- Training in therapeutic parenting approaches, including specialised Level 2 Therapeutic Fostering Qualification.
Carers will receive a weekly payment for the children they care for. The payment consists of two parts; the foster carer allowance (a weekly allowance of £800) and the child’s allowances.

“It helps with building confidence and forming friendships and allows children to pursue their hobbies and interests within their own community.
“A stable home life helps support school attendance and encourages young people to develop skills needed for future college and work opportunities.
“I am also interested in hearing from our current foster carers who have gained experience over the years and have a proven track record in supporting young people in foster care to achieve their goals.”
