Work is underway to improve pedestrian facilities in the streets near Penygawsi Primary School – to complement the major investment in state-of-the-art facilities for the school.

A new, modern building is being constructed on the existing school site, in time to open for September 2024. The wider development will also include a Multi Use Games Area, playing field and car park.

This investment is being jointly delivered by the Council and Welsh Government’s Mutual Investment Model, within ‘Band B’ of the Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme.

Alongside this significant development, further funding has been secured to improve the local safe walking route to school.

Work started to deliver these community improvements this week and will be completed during the summer.

Typical activity will include installing tactile paving, removing trip hazards like return kerbs, reducing the radius at junctions to reduce vehicle speeds, and road/footway resurfacing where needed.

Residents will notice the work taking place across 10 streets in total, with the activity varying from one location to another.

The streets include Chartist Road, Clos Hereford, Clos Lancaster, Clos Leland, Llys Derwen, Burgesse Crescent, Despenser Avenue, Portreeve Close, Cardiff Road and Westhill Drive.

Funded by the Council, this scheme will be delivered by the RCT Streetcare Team.

While some footway restrictions will be needed, a pedestrian route will be maintained at all times. Any potentially-disruptive work will avoid peak morning and afternoon times.
