Powys cabinet to consider Newtown schools consultation report

Plans to increase the capacity of a proposed new school building in Newtown so pupils from another school can also be included could be given the go-ahead if a recommendation to Cabinet is approved, the county council has said.

Powys County Council is proposing to increase the capacity of the proposed new school building at Ysgol Calon y Dderwen so that pupils from Treowen C.P. School can also be included.  It is the intention that, from September 2025, pupils continue to attend the existing Treowen building until the new building at Ysgol Calon y Dderwen is ready.

When the new building opens, the Treowen site closes and all pupils then move to the new school building for Ysgol Calon y Dderwen.

The council carried out a consultation on the proposal earlier this year and the findings of the consultation report will be considered by Cabinet on Tuesday, May 7.

Based on the findings of the consultation, Cabinet will be asked to proceed with the proposals through the publication of a statutory notice.

The proposals are part of the latest wave of the council’s Transforming Education Programme, which was relaunched in 2022 along with an updated version of the Strategy for Transforming Education in Powys.

Dr Richard Jones, the council’s Director of Education, said: “We would like to thank all those who took part in the consultation exercise for this proposal.

“After carefully considering all the consultations responses, the recommendation that will be put forward to Cabinet is to continue with the proposal by publishing the statutory notice.

“The council is committed to securing the best start in life for our young people and one of the ways we can achieve this is by transforming education.

“The council believes that this proposal meets the aims of the Strategy for Transforming Education in Powys as we look to improve the learner entitlement and experience while delivering 21st Century facilities that would provide environments where learners and teachers thrive and reach their potential.”
