A large bay fronted three bed semi detached period home in the heart of the South Wales valleys created a surge of interest when it was put for auction.

A dozen bidders competed to land the property at the online Newport, South Wales-based Paul Fosh Auctions sale.

Currently in need of a complete overhaul  2, Alexandra Road, Merthyr Tydfil, Mid Glamorgan, CF47 9AA, sold for double its guide price of £68,000.

Sean Roper, of Newport-based Paul Fosh Auctions, said: “Bidders on the house, in the town of Merthyr a place which is currently enjoying a prolonged period of renewed investment and job creation, could obviously see the underlying potential for the lot as a  total of 12 bidders made 66 bids before the hammer fell. The house sold for £137,000.

“In the correct hands and with investment this house has all the right ingredients to make a truly wonderful family home.

“The house retains a wealth of period features including a solid balustrade. There are two reception rooms, a kitchen and dining room on the ground floor with three bedrooms and bathroom above. There are gardens to the front and rear with outstanding views of the surrounding mountains.

“The new owner will have to look beyond what is currently before their eyes inside the house which is in quite a challenging condition, to see what can be achieved with some imagination, from this property . The house requires full modernisation and improvement but has UPVC double glazing. If retained, the many original features that come with the house would enhance any future improvements.

“The property is just a short distance from the town centre with an excellent range of shops, amenities and restaurants, bars/pubs. There are great transport links with a train station with direct links to Cardiff and road links to the A465 and A470.”
