Essential work on underground power lines is currently underway as the council prepares for the transformation of Castle Square into a greener, more welcoming space in the city centre.
Contractors working on behalf of National Grid have now arrived on site in Castle Square. Despite the ongoing construction, all businesses in the area are trading as usual.
This phase of the project involves moving and re-laying high-voltage cables to accommodate the new design for Castle Square Gardens, which has been developed with extensive public engagement. National Grid’s work necessitates temporary pedestrian re-routing, but the square and surrounding shops remain accessible.
Council leader Rob Stewart expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating: “It’s great to see work moving ahead at this pivotal location; our new-look Castle Square Gardens will be a fantastic place to meet, spend quality time and enjoy public events and gatherings. We thank the public for their understanding as contractors work on these vitally important cables.”
The main transformation work on Castle Square is set to commence this year, with an expected completion timeline of around one year.
The revitalised Castle Square Gardens will feature two pavilion buildings intended for food, drink, or retail businesses, an increase in greenery including new lawns and plantings, an interactive water feature, a new giant TV screen, a bandstand-style facility, outdoor seating areas, and the retention of public-use space.
Additionally, the iconic leaf sculpture currently in Castle Square will be relocated to another suitable location within Swansea.
This redevelopment aims to create a vibrant and inviting public space that will serve as a hub for social interaction and community events in the heart of the city.
