Big Dog Coffee, a beloved local coffee shop renowned for its rich aromas and community spirit, has announced a significant boost to its operations following the acquisition of grants totalling £21,617 with support from Caerphilly Borough Council’s Business, Enterprise and Renewal Team.

The business has received UKSPF Grants of £18,789 and a CEF Grant of £2,828.12 which enabled the company to help purchase state-of-the-art equipment, including a Diedrich drum roaster machine, and organise specialist coffee courses to enhance their offerings.

Founded over five years ago by Huw Williams, Big Dog Coffee has grown from a one-man operation to a vibrant establishment employing over 10 staff members. In just two years since opening its Blackwood location, the coffee shop has experienced remarkable growth, achieving a turnover of more than £271,000 last year. The support from the council has played a crucial role in this success, allowing the business to invest in its future and explore plans for additional locations.

“We are passionate about people and creating a sense of home and belonging,” said Huw Williams, Director/Owner of Big Dog Coffee. “The support from the Council’s Business Team has been so helpful in pushing the business on a positive trajectory. Applying for the grants was a simple and seamless process, enabling us to secure employment and invest in our future.”

Big Dog Coffee prides itself on sourcing high-quality coffee beans from around the world, working directly with farmers to ensure consistent quality. Their signature blends, such as Buster Feneck from Colombia and Treacle from Nicaragua, cater to a diverse range of palates. The company currently supplies to over 150 wholesale customers across the UK and is actively pursuing SALSA Accreditation to enhance their local and regional supply connections.

Adam Sadler, Principal Business Development Officer, expressed enthusiasm for Big Dog Coffee’s growth, “We are delighted to support Big Dog as they aim to expand their offerings within the borough. We look forward to seeing them grow from strength to strength.”
