The Council has appointed a contractor for its £1.5m scheme to replace the Pontrhondda Road Bridge in Llwynypia – and the project will be completed over the next year.

The bridge, which is nearing the end of its design life, has had a number of repairs in recent years and requires replacement. A weight limit for vehicles on the section of Sherwood Street which the bridge supports has been applied, while the bridge’s condition has been monitored. The Council has now appointed Dawnus Construction to deliver the replacement scheme.

During October 2017, Cabinet Members agreed a significant £1.1m investment for the scheme to be delivered, and an extra £400,000 was included in the Council’s Supplementary Capital Programme for Highways in 2018/19 – bringing the total investment to £1.5m. The scheme will get underway during summer 2018, and is due for completion in 2018/19.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways, said:

“This is a significant scheme and one which will, I am sure, be welcomed by the community of Llwynypia.

“Investing to maintain, enhance and future-proof our highways and transport infrastructure remains a priority and £1.5m has been included in the £23.6m Highways Capital programme to carry out this scheme in 2018/19.

“This follows a near £20m investment by the Council in Highways and Transportation schemes in 2017/18 through #RCTinvest.

“The Council will work closely with newly-appointed contractor Dawnus Construction Ltd. which will deliver this scheme over the next year. The Council will communicate details about the main works to be carried out later this year in due course.”
