The Vale of Glamorgan Council has worked with Llantwit Major Town Council and local people to create a new Placemaking plan for the town’s future.

Placemaking is about working together to improve the places where we live, work and spend time. It means listening, and using new ideas to make towns and neighbourhoods more attractive, welcoming and useful for everyone.

This new plan aims to build on those strengths and make the town an even better place to live, work and visit.

The plan is based on ideas and feedback from residents, local groups, and businesses, with many people getting involved to share their views. It looks at ways to celebrate what makes the town unique, improve access and connections, and support local shops and services.

The plan’s three themes of Celebrating, Connecting and Thriving help guide the plans for Llantwit Major:

    • Celebrating means making the most of Llantwit’s amazing history, nature and culture
    • Connecting is about making sure places in the town are easy for everyone to get to and enjoy
    • Thriving aims to support local businesses and help the community stay strong, healthy and full of life for the future

There are a mix of ideas, from small changes that can happen quickly, to bigger projects that will take more time, money and teamwork to develop and deliver. These include ideas around improvements to public spaces, the beach, community facilities and the station area.

Cllr Dr Peter Dickson, Mayor of Llantwit Major, said: “I have been pleased to work with our Town Council staff, Officers from the Creative Communities team at the Vale of Glamorgan Council, and Studio Myco who compiled the report.

“The process of Placemaking has formally laid out the aspirations of many of our town residents as to how the town could develop in the future. The likely benefits of their suggestions are plain to see, and it is encouraging that the final report also contains potential ‘quick wins’ which may not require significant capital spending.”

Cllr Bronwen Brooks, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places, said: “These plans are the result of real teamwork between the Council, Llantwit Major Town Council, and the local community. It’s been great to see so many people sharing their ideas on how to make Llantwit Major an even better place for everyone.

“The proposals celebrate the town’s unique character while tackling the priorities that are important to the community, and I look forward to seeing how these plans unfold in the future.”

The four towns in the Vale will each have a plan and this work has been funded by the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns programme, which supports projects to improve high streets and town centres.

The plan will now be used to help attract and support future investment and funding for projects that are a priority for residents and businesses.
