A new chapter in Cardiff’s educational landscape begins as Fairoak Primary School officially opens, serving the communities of Cathays, Gabalfa, Heath, Llandaff North, and Plasnewydd.
The school brings together pupils, staff, and families from the former Allensbank and Gladstone Primary Schools, offering 420 English-medium places and a nursery.
The opening has been met with widespread excitement. Parents and community members have expressed pride in the new school’s vision for a vibrant and inclusive environment.
Reflecting on the first day, parent and mum of three, Jen Williams said; “It’s a really emotional but a really wonderful day to see these two communities come together. My children have come from Allensbank and it has been wonderful to be here this morning on the first day. It feels like a celebration, everyone has been very welcoming. I trust the leadership at this school and I know this is going to be a good year.”
The name “Fairoak” was chosen through extensive consultation with pupils, parents, staff, and governors, inspired by a 600-year-old oak tree that once stood proudly in the area. This collaborative spirit has shaped every aspect of the school’s identity, from the logo and uniform to the formation of a new school council representing both legacy communities.
Headteacher Paula Shipton-Jones said: “Today marks a truly exciting new beginning as we officially open our new school — the result of bringing together two incredible school communities as one.
“Over the past year, staff, pupils, families, and the wider community have shown unwavering dedication, resilience, and collaboration to ensure a smooth and positive transition. As we open our doors, we also open our hearts to the opportunities that lie ahead, and I couldn’t be prouder of everything we’ve accomplished together. This is more than a new school – it’s the start of a shared journey filled with promise, growth, and possibility for Fairoak Primary School.”
Chair of Governors Cllr Chris Weaver added: “Fairoak Primary represents a new beginning for local children and families and is testament to what our community can achieve when we come together. In preparation for the opening, pupils and staff have shown incredible enthusiasm and creativity in helping shape their school, and they are committed to nurturing a space where every child feels valued and inspired.”
Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education Cllr Sarah Merry remarked: “The establishment of Fairoak Primary School marks an important milestone for the local community.
