Cardiff will see a number of road closures in place as the city gears up to host the Oysho Cardiff Half Marathon on Sunday, October 5. Organisers are advising residents and visitors to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys, as thousands of runners and spectators are expected.

Preparations will begin earlier in the week, with road closures starting on Wednesday, October 2, around the Civic Centre to set up and dismantle the race village.

From 5am on Thursday, October 2, until just before midnight on Monday, October 6, Edward VII Avenue to Boulevard de Nantes, through to its junction with City Hall Road, will be closed to all traffic.

Further closures will come into effect from 5am on Saturday, October 4, until late on Sunday, October 5, including:

    • King Edward VII Avenue (between Boulevard de Nantes and City Hall Road, and from Corbett Road to City Hall Road)

    • Museum Avenue (from Corbett Road to Gorsedd Gardens Road)

    • Gorsedd Gardens Road (between Park Place and Museum Avenue)

    • City Hall Road (between Museum Avenue and North Road)

Access will be permitted for private parking and deliveries until 9am on Saturday. Emergency service access will be maintained via North Road throughout the event.

Race day closures – Sunday, October 5

On the day of the race, a series of road closures will take place to accommodate the event:

    6am – 10.45am

    • North Road, from Colum Road to Boulevard de Nantes

    4am – 12 noon

    • North Road (south of Boulevard de Nantes to the A4161)

    • The A4161 (to Kingsway)

    • Kingsway (to Duke Street)

    • Duke Street and Castle Street

    • Cowbridge Road East (to Cathedral Road)

    10am – 3.10pm

    • Colum Road

    • Park Place (from St Andrews Place to Colum Road)

Additional access arrangements will be in place for areas such as Beatty Avenue, Queen Anne Square and Lady Mary Road.

    Rolling road closures

Between 8.30am and 3.10pm, rolling road closures will be enforced along parts of Cowbridge Road East, Leckwith Road, Sloper Road, Penarth Road, Cardiff Bay Barrage, Harbour Drive, Roald Dahl Plas, Pierhead Street, Bute Place, Lloyd George Avenue, Tyndall Street, Windsor Road, Adam Street, Fitzalan Place, Albany Road, Penylan Road, Ninian Road, Fairoak Road, Cathays Terrace and Museum Avenue.

Residents in Cardiff Bay will receive additional details directly, including diversion routes to manage access during the event. Roads will reopen earlier if the marathon route is completed ahead of schedule.

The bus gate on Westgate Street will also be suspended from 8.30am until 3.10pm on race day.

The Oysho Cardiff Half Marathon is one of the UK’s largest road races, attracting thousands of runners every year. This year’s event is expected to draw large crowds across the city.
