Why Ludo might be Cardiff’s new Sunday lunch favourite

Could this be Cardiff’s best Sunday roast? It is a bold claim, I know. Nothing really beats a homemade roast, well almost. If anything is close, Ludo might be the one to challenge it.

There are Sundays when you simply cannot face cooking. You want the comfort of a roast without the mountain of washing up that follows. The trouble is that going out for Sunday lunch can be a battle when you have a family that never agrees on what to eat. Some want a full roast. Some want something else. The kids almost always want the complete opposite of everyone else. Most places give you no room to breathe. It is roast or nothing.

Then we came across Ludo’s Sunday lunch and honestly, it might be the answer to everyone’s problems. Especially if you are into sport.

Ludo Cardiff opened back in September and you might remember we gave it a little preview over on Wales247. The place is packed with screens showing live sport in every direction and the food during that first visit was already a winner.

So when they announced Sunday lunch, we had to see if it was the full package.

If you want a proper roast, you are in the right place. Ludo, whether in Cardiff, Exeter or Bath, does a roast that feels like a treat rather than an obligation. Crisp roast potatoes, rich gravy, glazed carrots and parsnips and Yorkshire puddings that are huge and light at the same time.

You can pick from pork, chicken, beef or a nut roast. Every plate comes with red and savoy cabbage, parsnip purée and all the usual trimmings.

You can even add sides like pigs in blankets or creamy cauliflower cheese. It all goes very well with a pint or a glass of red. Prices start at £17.95 and the roasts are only served on Sundays.

Portions are generous, the space is great and most importantly everyone seems happy, including the kids.

It is also one of the few venues of this style that feels genuinely welcoming to families. The atmosphere is lively without being overwhelming and it never feels like the kids are in the way.

But here is the real magic for fussy eaters.

Ludo keeps the full menu running at the same time. So if someone wants pizza, no problem. If someone wants something lighter, it is there. If the kids want anything from the mains, they get 50 percent off as long as it is not from the grill. That alone can turn a stressful Sunday into a calm one.

They also have baby changing facilities, high chairs and a friendly team that seems used to families coming through the door. There is even a small lift up the stairs now. Under the previous owners they had to bring out a ramp, but Ludo have sorted proper access, which makes a real difference.

Each location has its own feel. Cardiff is always buzzing with sport and live music. Exeter has a chilled weekend vibe. Bath is made for a cosy Sunday afternoon. Roasts run until they sell out, so it is worth booking ahead.

Overall, Ludo might just be the most balanced Sunday lunch spot in the city. Great roast, plenty of choice for picky eaters, screens for the sports fans and a setup that works for families. It could well be Cardiff’s best Sunday roast. Or at the very least, the most stress free.
