Pontlottyn town centre is celebrating a major milestone as a comprehensive public realm enhancement project, funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, has been completed ahead of schedule and under budget – bringing significant benefits to the local community.

Located at the heart of Pontlottyn adjacent to Merchant Street, the scheme has transformed the Square into a safer, greener, and more welcoming space for residents and visitors. Key improvements include:

    • Cleaning, re-laying, and re-pointing paving slabs
    • Creating a pedestrian-friendly interface between highway and footway
    • Upgrading waste bins, railings, and copings
    • Replacing the bus shelter
    • Planting new trees in place of diseased or dying trees, which were felled
    • Introducing new green spaces and pedestrian routes
    • Planting low-maintenance, biodiversity-friendly wildflowers

From the outset, the design focused on sustainability and cost efficiency, reusing materials wherever possible and prioritising biodiversity. Delivering the project under the original budget means more resources can be reinvested into future community improvements in the Heads of the Valleys.

The revitalised Square will make pedestrian transit safer and encourage people to spend more time in the area, supporting local businesses and enhancing community life. Tree works were carried out after consultation with arboriculture specialists, ensuring only diseased or dying trees were removed. New trees have also been planted in the Square.

The project was led by CCBC’s Network Contracting Services department, with Newport-based contractor Noel Fitzpatrick Ltd completing works on-site.

This achievement reflects CCBC’s dedication to revitalising town centres, creating vibrant public spaces, and delivering projects that represent value for money, supported wholly by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Cllr. Jamie Pritchard, Leader of Council, on visiting the Square to see the work that had been carried out, said:

“Through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, Caerphilly Council is committed to driving regeneration across the borough. Pontlottyn Square is a fantastic example of how this funding helps us create safer, greener, and more attractive spaces for residents and visitors. Delivering ahead of schedule and under budget shows our commitment to efficiency and sustainability.”

Cllr Mansell Powell, representing the Moriah and Pontlottyn ward, added:

“I welcome this significant investment in Pontlottyn Square which has enhanced the heart of the town. Feedback from constituents so far has been extremely positive. I look forward to collaborating on future regeneration initiatives that will continue to enhance and improve the area for residents and visitors alike in the north of Caerphilly County Borough.”
