One of the Royal Navy’s most advanced warships, HMS Dragon, has been deployed to the eastern Mediterranean as tensions rise in the region.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed on Tuesday that the UK is sending helicopters with counter drone capabilities and HMS Dragon to Cyprus to help defend its Royal Air Force Akrotiri base from Iranian attacks.
“I’ve just spoken with the President of Cyprus to let him know that we are sending helicopters with counter drone capabilities and HMS Dragon is to be deployed to the region. We will always act in the interest of the UK and our allies,” the prime minister wrote in an X post.
The UK had already sent six fighter jets to the Akrotiri base, which was struck by a drone on Monday. After the attacks, Greek National Defense Minister Nikos Dendias also said that his nation will send two F-16 fighter jets and a ship from the Hellenic Navy to defend the site.
A warship proudly bearing the Welsh Dragon
HMS Dragon, also known as D35, is a Royal Navy Type 45 air defence destroyer. Designed primarily for anti air warfare, the ship is equipped to protect fleets against aircraft and missile threats using highly advanced radar and missile systems.

It is instantly recognisable by the large red Welsh Dragon emblem displayed on its bow, a bold tribute to Wales that sets it apart from other vessels in the fleet.
The ship is affiliated with the city of Wrexham, becoming the first vessel to hold this honour since the Second World War. The affiliation strengthens the bond between the Royal Navy and communities in Wales, with civic links and engagement forming part of its role beyond operations at sea.
Advanced air defence capabilities
As part of the Type 45 class of destroyers, HMS Dragon plays a crucial role in maritime security and advanced air defence. The class is widely regarded as one of the most capable air defence platforms in the world.
In addition to its anti air warfare role, the ship has supported maritime security operations and counter narcotics missions during previous deployments.
Its latest deployment underlines the strategic importance of RAF Akrotiri and the UK’s commitment to protecting its assets and allies in a rapidly evolving security environment.
For Wales, HMS Dragon’s presence in the region is a powerful reminder that the red dragon is not only a national symbol, but one that sails at the forefront of global operations.
