National Grid will be delivering a transformer to Imperial Park substation in Newport on 01 August as part of an essential upgrade to enable new connections and support growing electricity demand.
The transformer will be transported on a large specialist vehicle from ABP’s Port of Newport to Imperial Park Substation. This will be the first of two planned deliveries for installation at the existing National Grid 400kV Substation at Imperial Park.
Transformers are vital high voltage devices which boost substations’ capacity and resilience, stepping voltage up or down so electricity can be efficiently transmitted from power generators and safely distributed to homes and businesses through regional networks. They also improve system reliability and network efficiency, keeping electricity voltage stable.
The route and timings have been carefully planned with the local highway authorities and the police to minimise disruption. The delivery will involve a full police escort to manage traffic and ensure safety.
The new transformer will arrive at ABP’s Port of Newport and will be transported to our Imperial Park substation via road by heavy haulage specialists, Collett & Sons.
It is expected that the transformer will leave ABP’s Port of Newport at approximately 9:00am on the 01 August. The specialist vehicle will be travelling at a speed of approximately 15 to 30 mph dependent on road conditions.
It will travel from the port along West Way Road to join the A48, turning off onto Celtic Way. It will then take Dyffryn Lane to Imperial Park Substation. The delivery is expected to arrive at Imperial Park Substation between 10:00am and 11:00am.
Once on site, the new transformer will be moved into position, installed and commissioned.
