Neath Port Talbot residents invited to have their say on Aberavon beach dog rules

Neath Port Talbot Council is asking residents and visitors for their views on proposed rules for dogs and their owners at Aberavon beach and promenade.

The consultation focuses on new Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs), which aim to maintain the safety, cleanliness and enjoyment of the popular seafront for everyone. The proposed orders would replace the existing measures, which are due to expire.

Under the proposals, the current seasonal restrictions on the main beach would remain in place, meaning dogs would continue to be prohibited from the main section of Aberavon Beach between 1 May and 30 September each year. The restriction is intended to help protect bathing water quality and provide a safe environment for families and visitors during the busiest months.

The existing requirement for dogs to be kept on leads on the promenade during the same period would also continue.

The council is also seeking views on extending the current “dogs on leads” rule on the promenade so that it applies all year round rather than only during the summer months.

The authority says it recognises Aberavon seafront is valued by a wide range of users, including dog owners, and wants to hear balanced views before making a decision.

Current restrictions aim to balance the needs of beach users and dog owners, with around half of the beach remaining dog friendly while the other half is subject to seasonal restrictions.

The council also notes that Aberavon currently holds a Seaside Award and, provided water quality continues to be rated as excellent, there are ambitions to apply for Blue Flag status. Keep Wales Tidy has confirmed that a full dog restriction is required to meet Blue Flag standards, meaning a timed restriction, such as between 9am and 6pm, would not be possible. However, the consultation will allow residents and visitors to suggest alternative approaches.

Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism and Wellbeing, Cllr Cen Phillips said:

“Aberavon seafront is one of our most valued and well-used spaces, enjoyed by residents and visitors throughout the year, so it’s important we strike the right balance between maintaining a safe, clean and welcoming environment for everyone, while also recognising and balancing the needs of responsible dog owners.

“This consultation is an opportunity for people to have their say and help shape how these measures are applied in the future. I would encourage anyone who uses the seafront to take part and share their views before any final decisions are made.”

The council is encouraging residents, visitors and local groups to take part in the consultation and share their views before any final decisions are made.
