Powys County Council has confirmed that a previously proposed traffic restriction at the Gurkha Corner junction in Brecon will not be introduced following a review of feedback received from local councillors, residents and businesses.
The junction forms part of the wider Brecon Town Centre improvement works, which aim to make the town centre safer, more accessible and easier to navigate for all users.
The restriction had originally been proposed following feedback received during consultation on the scheme in 2025, with the aim of reducing unnecessary traffic in the town centre, improving safety and making traffic movements clearer. The original design did not accommodate the right-hand turn at the Gurkha Corner restaurant. However, following further feedback received since construction work began, the council has reviewed the proposals and how the junction will operate in practice.
The review confirmed that the redesigned junction can safely accommodate vehicles up to the size of a medium-sized panel van, reflecting the types of vehicles most commonly accessing Glamorgan Street, nearby businesses and the library car park. As a result, the previously proposed restriction will not be implemented.
Councillor Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, said: “We recognise that residents and businesses have expressed concerns about access arrangements at Gurkha Corner, and we would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to share their views.
“Listening to local feedback is an important part of delivering improvements that work for the community. Following a detailed review, we are satisfied that the revised junction layout can safely accommodate the types of vehicles that regularly need access to this area.
“The wider town centre improvements are designed to create a safer, more attractive and more sustainable environment for everyone who lives in, works in and visits Brecon. As with all elements of the scheme, we will continue to monitor how the town centre operates once the works are complete and will consider any lessons learned as part of the post-implementation review.”
