A short film featuring local youngsters dealing with the impact of anti-social behaviour received its premiere in front of invited guests in Cineworld, Newport Retail Park.

Developed and filmed over several months, the project was led by Newport City Council’s youth offending service (YOS) and funded by a grant from One Newport, the public services board.

Newport-based Pilapala Films directed and produced the film which uses a cast of local amateur actors to show the effects of anti-social behaviour on individuals and communities.

It is narrated by one young person who had successfully completed a referral order with YOS.

The film will be presented at primary school assemblies by YOS diversion officers as well as police and fire service school liaison officers.

Pupils will also be encouraged to enter a poster competition after watching the film.

Councillor Paul Cockeram, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for social services, said:

“Anti-social behaviour can be a terrible blight on people’s lives and their communities. I commend all those involved with making this excellent film, particularly the young people.

“Making children aware of the impact at a young age could stop them becoming involved in such behaviour when they are older – and we know youngsters can be great ambassadors for passing on the right messages to their peers and others.”
