A family-owned poultry farm in Monkswood, Monmouthshire, has increased the size of its business after securing £190,000 in funding from NatWest.

The owners of Cefn Mawr Poultry have used the six-figure funding package to demolish and replace its previous poultry shed with a larger, eco-friendly facility.

Completed in April last year, the upgraded facility has now increased in size by 10 per cent, allowing a total of 105,000 birds to be reared at any one time.

As well as increased space, the purpose-built unit benefits from new technology and additional windows have been installed, creating a more efficient system with better husbandry and animal welfare.

Established in 1967, Cefn Mawr Poultry is run by husband and wife team Rob and Chris Parker who took ownership of the business from Chris’ parents 25 years ago. Over the past two decades, Cefn Mawr Poultry has seen substantial growth and now has contracts with leading food Avara Foods, the third largest poultry supplier in the UK.

Since the expansion the business has already seen its turnover increase by 10 per cent.

Rob Parker, Owner, Cefn Mawr Poultry, said: “Since taking over the business from my parents-in-law, we have grown significantly, and had reached the point at which expansion was necessary to accommodate increasing demand. The funding from NatWest enabled us to invest in our infrastructure and safely and humanely rear more animals. We’ve now increase our capacity and in just seven months have already seen a positive effect on both profits and turnover.”

Carol Jones, Relationship Manager at NatWest, said: “Rob and Chris run a great family business and they are hugely knowledgeable in their field of work. With the funding we have provided, the couple could expand the farm exactly as they planned and it’s great to see their hard work paying off.”
