Aberdare Company Wins Two National Rail Awards

When winning a national award is a major achievement for any business, Hammond ECS Ltd is delighted to have won two categories at the 2018 UK Rail Industry Association Awards.

The Aberdare-based company won both the Passenger Safety and Subcontractor of the Year Awards at a dinner attended by 1,500 rail-industry decision-makers. This is a rare feat for first-time entrants for these prestigious awards. It recognises the expertise and craftsmenship of the entire Hammond team that delivered first class projects to their rail clients.

The Passenger Safety Award recognises the contribution made by the Hammond-developed fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) Mountbridge Platform Upgrade System. Mountbridge installations rectify the Passenger Train Interface (PTI) stepping distance issues, commonly identified by ‘Mind the Gap’ notices and announcements at rail stations. Reducing the gap to meet current standards improves the passenger experience by both reducing injuries and the time needed to board and alight trains.

Subcontractor of the Year acknowledges the consistent quality of work delivered for well-known principal contractors. These contractors choose subcontractors based on factors including craftsmenship, meeting deadlines, collaborative working and value for money. To be chosen as the top subcontractor honours the commitment of the entire Hammond workforce.

Says Jeff Walker, Director of Hammond ECS,

“The whole team is proud to have its innovation and quality of work recognised through winning these two national awards. It shows that the values which underpin our company and the projects we deliver are acknowledged by our clients and peers at a national level. This spurs us on to continue our development of Mountbridge and deliver more top-quality client projects.”

Established 20 years ago by father and son Allen and Jeff Walker, Hammond ECS is a specialist rail and structure maintenance company, serving the rail and highways sectors across the UK. In the rail sector, the 40-strong company works directly for and indirectly as subcontractors to Network Rail.
