Sitting in the Bristol Channel, 5 miles off the coast of Cardiff, getting to Flat Holm island has always been a little more challenging than most parts of Cardiff, but a new jetty installed on the island is set to make things much easier.
The £365,000 jetty, which was funded via the Landfill Communities Fund by Mondegreen EB, is a vital structure for servicing and bringing visitors to the island and will help support a proposed £1.3 million project to preserve the island’s heritage, protect its rich wildlife and attract more visitors.
After more than 30 years subject to the severe weather and extreme tidal range of the Severn Estuary, the old jetty had deteriorated with part of it being lost to the sea completely, leaving only a maximum 1.5 hour landing window on the island and limiting its accessibility for visitors.
Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said: “Flat Holm is steeped in history that stretches all the way back to the 6thcentury, it’s a unique attraction and one of our city’s hidden treasures.
“The new jetty will play an integral part in our wider plans to breathe new life into the island, helping increase visitor numbers and enabling more people to discover the fascinating past and unusual flora and fauna to be found at the most southerly point of Wales.”
