Road safety measures planned for Wyllie Bends

A package of highway safety measures will be implemented on a key route between Wyllie and Ynysddu to help reduce the speed of traffic along this busy stretch of road.

Caerphilly county borough council has agreed to carry out a programme of works on the B4251 Newport Road, with the scheme due to start this summer.

A review of the speed limit was undertaken in 2017 in line with Welsh Assembly Government guidance, but this did not identify the road as requiring any changes to the existing speed limit. However, following a number of accidents at the site, the council commissioned an independent consultant to undertake a Safety Study along the route to help minimise the likelihood of further accidents.

The key safety improvements that have been agreed include:

    • Reducing the speed limit to 40mph
    • Erecting chevron signs at relevant bends along the route
    • Solid white lining to restrict overtaking manoeuvres
    • Improvements to the carriageway surface
    • Further vegetation clearance to provide clear visibility of all signage.

Leader of CCCBC and local ward member, Cllr Philippa Marsden welcomed the news, “This site has been the scene of a number of tragic accidents over recent years and we are keen to do all we can to reduce the chance of further incidents in future.”

“These key improvements will help reduce the speed of traffic along this strategic route and will improve highway safety for road users and pedestrians. This is yet another example of the council taking positive steps to improve the local highway network for the traveling public,” she added.

The council has also benefitted from a recent funding announcement from Welsh Government regarding sustainable transport. It is currently assessing whether cycle lanes could be marked out on this section of highway as part of the safety measures.

Once implemented, the improvements will be continuously monitored and reviewed by the council to measure their effectiveness.
