A scheme to create a safe and pleasant route for pedestrians and cyclists through a former brownfield site is set to go ahead.
Approval was given for the active travel project through Monkey Island in Lliswerry, part of Newport City Council’s work to improve the city’s cycling and walking network.
It will also provide a safe route to school for children living in the Lysaght Village development.
Councillor Roger Jeavons, the council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for city services, said: “I’m delighted this great scheme has been given permission to proceed. Our aim is to make walking and cycling the most attractive option for shorter journeys by creating a network that will connect where people live to their destinations.
“The Monkey Island route will be an excellent addition to that network and I know it is one that will be welcomed by the community. I’m especially pleased that it will also provide a safe route to local schools for children.
“Walking and cycling is proven to improve people’s health and well-being and we strive to make our Active Travel routes suitable for all abilities.”
The route through Monkey Island will include a new ramp to connect the north footway of the main road, the open space area and the housing estate so people do not have to use the multiple crossings on the SDR junction.
It will also provide safe and inclusive from the riverside city circular route to the commercial and residential areas in Lliswerry as well as the new links on Corporation Road that were installed earlier this year.
