Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet is set to consider plans for phase 1 of improvements being delivered as part of a £78 million investment through the 21st Century Schools and Colleges Band B programme.

A report will be considered by Cabinet at a virtual meeting on 22nd July; if approved, the council will begin consultation on plans for the expansion of Trinity Fields School and Resource Centre, Ystrad Mynach, along with the relocation and expansion of Ysgol Gymraeg Cwm Gwyddon in Cwmcarn.

Proposals for Trinity Fields, the only special school in the Caerphilly county borough, include building a new extension offering high quality, modern educational facilities fit for the 21st Century, accommodating an additional 80 pupils.

In addition, the design of the new school will incorporate facilities that will allow the opportunity for Social Services and Health to further develop and enhance their work with pupils and families, as well as benefitting the wider community.

In order to meet demand for Welsh Medium education in the east of the county borough, the building of a new school is proposed for Ysgol Gymraeg Cwm Gwyddon on the site of the former Cwmcarn High. The new building would be able to accommodate 420 pupils plus nursery, childcare and community use. The new facility would also increase opportunities for the provision of Welsh medium childcare, including wrap around, after school and during holidays.

The design of the new school will also incorporate a Special Resource Base, Rising 3’s, Planning, Preparation and Assessment (PPA) room and additional nursery facilities.

Cllr Barbara Jones, the council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Achievement, said “If approved, this investment offers opportunities not only to increase capacity for learners, but also to help improve educational attainment; by enhancing the learning environment.”

If approved by the council’s Cabinet, consultation on both projects will be carried out during the Autumn 2020 term.  Following the consultation period, a report along with any responses received will be collated and reported back to Cabinet members for full consideration prior to proceeding to Full Business Case.
