Analysing Willie Mullins’ leading charges in each of the Cheltenham Festival feature races

As the excitement builds for the upcoming Cheltenham Festival, all eyes are once again on Irish maestro Willie Mullins, who is poised to make his presence felt at Prestbury Park.

With an impressive track record and a string of victories under his belt, Mullins is on course to clinch his 11th Leading Trainer award — showcasing his unparalleled expertise in the world of jumps racing.

The anticipation surrounding Mullins’ performance at Cheltenham is palpable, with many wondering if he can surpass his own record of 10 wins set in 2022.

With another victory this year, Mullins could solidify his legacy even further, especially as is just six wins away from recording an incredible 100 Cheltenham Festival triumphs.

The feature races at the Cheltenham Festival, including the Champion Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase, Ryanair Chase, Stayers’ Hurdle, and Gold Cup, are the pinnacle of the event.

So, let’s delve into Mullins’ leading charges in each of these standout contests.

Champion Hurdle – State Man

With Constitution Hill ruled out due to infection, the path to victory in the Champion Hurdle seems clear for Mullins’ State Man.

Emerging as the favourite in the absence of Nicky Henderson’s star, State Man is poised to seize the crown with racing odds today of 1/3 suggesting a comfortable win.

Had Constitution Hill not been ruled out, then the Jessica Donnelly-owned seven-year-old would have likely had to settle for second in the Champion Hurdle once again.

Queen Mother Champion Chase – Energumene

Believe it or not, before 2021, Mullins had never won the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

However, along came star chaser Energumene, and the title has subsequently returned to Closutton in Mullins’ suitcase for the last two years in a row.

He needn’t even bother removing it from his mantle this year either, as El Fabiolo looks set to make it three wins in a row in the day two showpiece for Mullins.

At odds of 4/9, the seven-year-old looks set to extend his unbeaten record over fences to eight wins while leaving his old rival Jonbon in his wake again.

Ryanair Chase – Capodanno

Mullins enjoyed back-to-back wins in the Ryanair Chase with Allaho in 2021 and 2022. However, injuries have stopped that horse from completing the hat trick.

Another victory for Mullins looks unlikely this year as well, as Capodanno is his best chance at odds of 6/1.

Despite the challenges, Capodanno’s impressive performance in the Grade 2 Cotswold Chase signals his potential to deliver a commanding victory.

While the competition remains fierce, Mullins’ expertise cannot be discounted, making Capodanno a horse to watch in this prestigious race.

Stayers’ Hurdle – Sir Gerhard

A first win in the Stayers’ Hurdle since 2018 isn’t very likely either, as Sir Gerhard is fancied at 8/1 for the second feature on day three of the Cheltenham Festival.

The nine-year-old was reverted to hurdles in December after some poor performances in chases, and he returned with a bang — winning comfortably at Punchestown on New Year’s Eve.

This is a big step up in class for the Cheveley Park Stud-owned horse from that contest, however.

Gold Cup – Galopin Des Champs

Following his stunning victory last year, Galopin Des Champs returns to the Gold Cup with hopes of securing a fourth triumph in six years for Mullins.

Despite facing setbacks in form, Galopin Des Champs’ successive wins at the top-level underscore his resilience and potential to clinch victory once again.

As Mullins aims for a historic repeat in the Gold Cup, Galopin Des Champs remains a formidable contender, highlighting the trainer’s mastery of the sport.
