Dozens of volunteers who support the UK’s leading end of life charity were celebrated at events across Wales last week. Marie Curie brought volunteers from all roles together at thank you events as part of the 40th Volunteers’ Week – from fundraising group members to retail volunteers, Companions and hospice supporters. Hospitality and Catering and Travel and Tourism learners from Cardiff and Vale College have been on a once in a lifetime trip to Cancun in Mexico. While there they learnt about studying in another country and the importance of travel, tourism and hospitality to the region’s economy. The learners also explored the importance of sustainability and experienced the culture, welcome and hospitality of the Mexican people. Employees from Amazon’s corporate office in Swansea have come together to pack thousands of new baby kits filled with essential items worth more than £10,000 for a charity initiative supporting families in need across the city. The ‘Welcome to the World’ kits which contain essential items for babies such as wipes, baby cream, dummies, cloths, and bibs packed in a cloth bag, were donated to Cwtch Mawr, Wales’s first Multibank, which is run by Swansea charity Faith in Families, with support from former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and Amazon UK. Coleg Cambria learner Naomi Spaven, from Mold, won the Fruit Cake category with a delicious dark chocolate, orange and ginger Bara Brith. One of Wales’ leading communications agency, Golley Slater, is set to make history as the team gear up for a charity challenge to celebrate 30 years of Velindre University NHS Trust. On Friday, 14 June, 40 team members will take on the #DiolchVelindre challenge and walk an impressive 30 miles in just one day. A group of North Wales motorcyclists are pledging to raise thousands for the Wales Air Ambulance Charity and Anglesey Young Carers. Anglesey Motorcycle Club, which was established in 1998, has nominated both charities for fundraising events this year. Its members, whose clubhouse is based at the Anglesey Circuit Café Bar at Ty Croes near Rhosneigr have raised over £42,000 for various worthy causes over the decades. CARDIFF Bay’s leading entertainment venue, The Red Dragon Centre, has teamed up with Welsh artist Nathan Wyburn to mark Pride month with a unique art installation and charity auction. Nathan is a proud spokesperson for LGBTQ+ equality and often uses his art to reflect this. A herring gull who was rescued after becoming entangled on a building in Cardiff has triggered a renewed warning from the RSPCA about the hazards to wildlife of damaged or badly-fitting bird deterrent netting. The bird was trapped under netting on a roof of a building on Charles Street in the city centre on Monday (3 June) with the RSPCA contacted for help after someone from another building spotted the gull in distress on the roof.
