Cardiff’s Wood Street and Central Square Scheme has been awarded a second major civil engineering award. In June this year the scheme picked up the Civil Project of the Year Award, to which it has now added the Bill Ward Sustainability Award, which was won at the Ice Wales Cymru Civil Engineering Awards 2023, on Friday, September 22. £2.1 million of funding towards a major restoration of Cardiff’s historic Central Market has been secured by Cardiff Council through The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The funding award has been made possible thanks to money raised by National Lottery players. The proposed restoration of the Grade II* Listed Victorian market is expected to require an investment of approximately £6.5 million. If full funding is secured, the restoration would see original design features revealed, traditional entrances and original stalls restored, the iconic glass roof repaired, and improvements made to the Victorian drainage system. Swansea Council is in the early stages of preparing its replacement Local Development Plan (RLDP). All Councils in Wales are required to draft a LDP, which sets out its long term plans for development, including housing, leisure, green space and sites for business. A spectacular statue of Welsh comedian, singer and entertainer Max Boyce will be unveiled in the popular ex-miner’s home town of Glynneath on September 30th, 2023. A Cardiff City fan who posted a racist comment about a Swansea City player has been banned from attending football matches. Peter Clive Tucker made a racist remark on a social media video posted during the Cardiff City v Swansea City match on April 2, 2022. The 57-year-old from Aberdare, who postes online as ‘Luigi Sanchez’, made the comment about the then Swansea City player Michael Obafemi. Data from the SMMT or The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders showed a significant increase in car ownership in 2022. Furthermore, the data also indicated a big jump in the total number of vehicles on UK roads, figures that were last seen in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. Lewis Sawdon, 30, and Ffion Evans 24, of Maesteg, have been jailed for possession with intent to supply class A drugs Officers executed a warrant at their home in January 2021 following concerns raised from the local community. Sawdon and Evans were found in possession of cocaine, with a street value of £3,590, and heroin, worth £2,000. Officers also found scales with residue from drugs on it, and £580 in cash. The Bridgend Indoor Market at the Rhiw Shopping Centre in Bridgend town centre remains closed in the interests of public safety due to a potential issue involving the use of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) within the structure’s roof. Only the indoor market has been confirmed as being affected by the temporary closure, and the adjacent Rhiw Shopping Centre currently remains open for business as usual.
