Newport City Council has announced that the first phase of its new three-weekly bin collection schedule will start from Monday 19 June. The new schedule will see household rubbish bins and garden waste bins be collected once every three weeks. Currently these are collected once every two weeks. Around 12,100 households across the city will move to three-weekly collections as part of the first phase. A mix of streets and a mix of households has been selected from across the city. Welsh Minister for Education & the Welsh Language, Jeremy Miles MS, has today visited Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Helyg to see remodelling work funded by Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme. The school in Blaina, Blaenau Gwent, used funding from the Welsh Government programme to remodel the building, creating both internal and external spaces to improve the teaching and learning environment. Internally, the school repurposed their changing rooms into Sensory and Nurture spaces, along with a STEM room and a Library and Media Suite to support pupil development. The Welsh Government will invest up to £30m to deliver more care at home or in the community and reduce the time people spend in hospitals. Earlier this week, Finance Minister Rebecca Evans met a group of women who have trained as HGV drivers thanks to a pilot project targeting skills shortages in traditionally gendered sectors. In the last two years 19 women have completed their HGV license training through the Welsh Government-funded Personal Learning Account (PLA) programme at Coleg Sir Gȃr in Carmarthenshire. Many of those taking part in the training have retrained from previous roles to now go on and work in the haulage industry.
