A Newport man who engaged in conversation with what he believed to be a 12-year-old girl, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on Tuesday (23 May). Mathew Jones, 33 from Bettws, Newport, was sentenced to five years and four months imprisonment after being found guilty of online sexual offences for engaging in sexual communications with a child and arranging to meet a child following sexual grooming. Officers from Tarian, the Regional Organised Crime Unit for southern Wales, and South Wales Police arrested and charged Jones in March 2023. Three generations of the same family, including a son and grandson from the South of France, joined nearly 200 people who took part in the annual Montgomery Canal Triathlon on Saturday. The family was led by a grandfather in his 80s from Uxbridge who was joined by his son and grandson in entering the event, organised by the Friends of the Montgomery Canal with assistance from the Canal & River Trust, which owns the canal. A new report has revealed that Skyline Swansea would create 100 new permanent jobs in its first year of operation and bring an £84million boost to the local economy by 2039, if given the go-ahead for its plans to develop a world-class leisure destination at Kilvey Hill. South Wales Police is continuing to investigate serious disorder which happened in the Ely area of Cardiff on Monday, May 22. The disorder followed a fatal road traffic collision in Snowden Road, Ely, which tragically claimed the lives of best friends Kyrees Sullivan and Harvey Evans. The families continue to be supported by family liaison officers. In relation to the disorder, nine people have now been arrested.
