A pioneering Parkinson’s research project using a ‘Benjamin Button’ reverse ageing technique to produce stem cells has begun in Cardiff. The three-year study at Cardiff University, led by winner of the prestigious Future Leader Fellowship Dr Dayne Beccano-Kelly, is being funded through a substantial £324,695 grant from Parkinson’s UK. Researchers believe it has the potential to improve our understanding of the condition, which could lead to more effective treatments. Yesterday at The National Waterfront Museum, Swansea, the Carolyn Davies Creative Learning Award was presented to Blaenymaes Primary School. The award recognises the artistic project inspired by a visit to a Theatr na nÓg production, namely The Trial of Elgan Jones. The award ceremony, hosted by actor Richard Nichols, was attended by three schools, Blaenymaes Primary School, St Thomas Community Primary School and St David’s RC Primary School, shortlisted for the prize. A £2.5m investment is planned in upgrading and improving residential, day care and child and family settings run by Swansea Council. The council’s cabinet is being asked to approve the spending on the front-line services at its next meeting. A key Swansea regeneration project has been handed to world-class Welsh business Penderyn Distillery. Swansea Council has been transforming a significant area of the former Hafod Morfa Copperworks site over the past three years. The council worked with partners – including Penderyn Distillery and Swansea University – to create the National Lottery Heritage Fund bid.
