People in Wales who are at risk of their heart stopping suddenly, may be fitted with wearable defibrillators following new guidance by Health Technology Wales (HTW) Wearable cardioverter-defibrillators continuously monitor heart rhythm and automatically deliver an electric shock within one minute, when certain irregular  heart rhythms are detected. They are worn like a vest against the skin and can be used as an interim measure during a recovery period or before further hospital treatment. Swansea University is set to play a key role in a new platform aimed at bringing together UK strengths in the research of rare diseases to develop better and faster understanding, diagnosis and treatment. LGBTQ+ champion and creative producer, Berwyn Rowlands, has been made an Honorary Fellow at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s (UWTSD) graduation ceremony held in Carmarthen today. Berwyn Rowlands is the founder of the Iris Prize LGBTQ+ Film Festival, a Cardiff-based LGBTQ+ short film festival which celebrates and champions LGBTQ+ titles and filmmakers with messages which are positive and uplifting.  He has also made a significant contribution to the creative arts in Wales. Cutting edge projects in areas including semiconductors, AI, quantum, and engineering biology have received up to £50,000 each from Innovate UK. Each company has never previously received funding support from Innovate UK. GWM ORA UK announces its new partnership with Wales’ largest automotive retailer, Sinclair Group. Pressures including rising inflation, increased demand for services and anticipated pay awards for its staff have led Cardiff Council to predict a £36.8m gap in its budget for 2024-25, a new report has revealed. The Council’s latest Medium Term Financial Plan (MTFP), which will be reviewed by the Cabinet at its meeting on July 13, outlines in detail the predicted cost of delivering its services next year, including running schools, caring for vulnerable people and operating libraries and venues. Building work is expected to start on Cardiff’s new 15,000-capacity indoor arena site by the end of this year. Cardiff Councill’s Cabinet will discuss the progress of the project with recommendations to approve a range of legal agreements at its meeting on 13 July, so that both the indoor arena and the regeneration of the Atlantic Wharf site can take a further step forward.
