An avenue of 80 trees has been planted at Tredegar Park as part of Newport City Council’s Queen’s Jubilee Green Canopy activities.

Lining the new and improved active travel route within the park, a mixture of hornbeams and fastigiate lime trees will add to the aesthetic of the cycle and footpath, enhance the park and contribute to the council’s plans under the carbon reduction strategy.

Additional hornbeams have also been planted at other locations in the park to improve the general tree cover.

Councillor Jane Mudd, leader of the council was joined by other members of the council’s Cabinet as works were completed on the avenue.

Councillor Mudd commented: “Tredegar Park is a great asset for the city and this additional planting will only serve to enhance its appeal. We have also set an ambitious target to be a carbon neutral organisation by 2030 and to use our services to support climate change action across the city. Additional tree planting on our land will play an important part in achieving those targets.

“We also want more people in Newport to make short journeys through walking or cycling, and extensive work to improve our active travel network, including this route through Tredegar Park, is taking place. Lining the route with trees will also complement the low-level lighting which was designed with the environment in mind and to minimise the effects of the lighting on wildlife.”

The Tredegar Park active travel route runs through the park, through the pedestrian subway and provides a link to the old golf course by the A48.

The completion of this new avenue of trees follows on from Jubilee activities at the beginning of the month which saw new trees planted at five Newport schools which are also celebrating 70 years, and all Newport schools being offered a new tree under the Queen’s Jubilee green canopy project.
