South Wales tech-for-purpose business, Big Lemon, has been named a 2022 Best for the World™ B Corp in recognition of its exceptional positive impact for its workers.

Best for the World is a distinction granted by B Lab to Certified B Corporations (B Corps) whose verified B Impact Scores in the five impact areas evaluated in the B Impact Assessment — community, customers, environment, governance, and workers — rank in the top 5% of all B Corps in their corresponding size group.

Big Lemon has earned this honour on the back of realigning the business around a new mission two years ago – to only deliver work that positively impacts people, the planet and communities. Through a reimagining of its internal processes and culture towards this goal, the company’s work is now 100% in the ‘tech for good’ space.

The company has led the way in developing innovative co-production approaches to its work, putting the user at the heart of its digital product development, while also focusing on HR initiatives to make Big Lemon an employer of choice for people to use their tech skills for good in the world.

The approach has paid off with Big Lemon being named in the Escape 100 list of organisations to escape to – the only company headquartered in Wales – for two years running and anonymous team surveys showing 100% of employees would recommend Big Lemon as a great place to work.

Sam Wheeler, director and co-owner of Big Lemon said:

“Being recognised in the B Corp worldwide ecosystem is a huge recognition. We started on our Tech with Purpose journey to build better, more sustainable, socially focused products that leave the world in a better place around two years ago. We wanted to collaborate, create and build products that aligned with us as individuals. To create products that allowed others to do better in the world at large, and have a positive impact at its core. That’s why we became a B Corp.

“We are excited to continue our B Corp journey and achieve even more positive impact in the future, involving a wider community, and sharing learnings. It’s a privilege to gain this achievement – it fuels our mission and commitment – and reinforces that we are doing the right thing for the right reasons.”

Every year, Best for the World recognises the top-performing B Corps creating the greatest positive impact through their businesses. More than a badge of honour, Best for the World provides an opportunity for recognised companies to share knowledge, learnings, and best practices with the B Corp community and businesses outside of the community to encourage innovation and transformation across the business sector.

Dan Osusky, head of standards and insights at B Lab Global said:

“Each Best for the World edition is an opportunity to raise the bar for how businesses can and should operate to create real and lasting positive impact for their workers, customers, communities, and the environment. While no company is perfect and even the best companies can and should continue to strive to improve, the B Corps recognised as Best for the World can provide us all — standards setters, B Corps, non B Corps, and sustainability advocates — with inspiration on what true leadership in business can look like to make progress on addressing our current global challenges.”

The Best for the World recognition is administered by B Lab, the global nonprofit network that certifies and mobilises B Corps, which are businesses that meet high standards of positive social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Today, there are more than 5,000 B Corps across 80 countries and 155 industries, unified by one common goal: building an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economic system.
