Bridgend commits to £5m highway resurfacing programme

The Cabinet of Bridgend County Borough Council has confirmed that resurfacing works for the local highways network will continue as planned despite recent inflationary increases in material, labour and machinery costs.

The commitment follows concerns raised by one of the council’s contractors, Centre Great Ltd, over a number of recent cost increases triggered by national and global events such as steep rises in oil and fuel prices.

With Bridgend County Borough Council intending to invest more than £5m into highway resurfacing works over the course of this specific contract, the increase amounts to 8.93 per cent or an additional £446,500.

Highways officers will now look at how the planned works can be reconfigured while meeting any additional costs from within the existing budget.

Every year, the council invests millions of pounds into resurfacing, repairing and maintaining the local highways network, and we remain committed towards ensuring that this remains a priority.

These works are vital for keeping the county borough on the move and ensuring that communities have access to a safe, high-quality network of local roads that can be relied upon.

While it is hugely concerning that the contract costs have risen due to factors that are beyond our control, we nevertheless remain confident and committed towards maintaining the highways network to the very best of our ability.
