White Bridge in Pontypridd to close for one week for corrective repair works

Berw Road Bridge, better known as White Bridge in Pontypridd, will be closed to both vehicles and pedestrians throughout next week while corrective works are carried out following its recent major restoration.

The Grade Listed structure was badly damaged during Storm Dennis, with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council working closely with Cadw to deliver a complex restoration project that was completed in summer 2024.

The restoration included several hundred individual concrete and structural steel repairs, bridge deck waterproofing, and replacement of the highway drainage system and road surfacing.

Following additional repairs and a maintenance inspection last year, further corrective work is now required. Contractor Concrete Repairs Limited, which carried out the original restoration scheme, will undertake the work at no additional cost to the council.

To allow safe access to the underside of the bridge, White Bridge will be closed from 8am on Monday, August 10. The closure is expected to be lifted on or before Sunday, August 16.

The work has been coordinated alongside the demolition of the former Pontypridd Police Station and Berw Road Car Park site. The council has confirmed there will be no traffic management on Berw Road during next week’s bridge closure, and White Bridge will remain open during any future works that affect traffic on Berw Road.

The latest scheme will include localised repairs to the bridge’s protective gunite concrete layer, corrective painting to the underside of the bridge and parapets, replacement of the deck joint sealant within the carriageway and a single resurfacing repair.

During the closure, motorists travelling from the south of the bridge should follow the diversion via The Parade, West Street, Bridge Street Roundabout, Bridge Street and Berw Road. Drivers travelling in the opposite direction should use Berw Road, Bridge Street, West Street, Middle Street, Bonvilston Road and The Parade.

The council has advised that access through the closure cannot be maintained for emergency service vehicles or pedestrians.

A map showing the road closure and diversion routes is available on the council’s website.

Residents and road users are thanked in advance for their cooperation while the works are carried out.
