Another Caerphilly County Borough resident has been awarded £500 for recycling their food waste as part of the Borough’s Mash for Cash campaign.

Mr and Mrs Roberts from Pontllanfraith have been announced as the latest winners of Caerphilly County Borough’s Mash for Cash campaign.

The initiative was launched in March 2022, with an aim to increase food waste recycling participation and contribute to Welsh Government’s decarbonisation targets. And sees houses monitored with one food recycling participant chosen at random each month to win £500.

All Caerphilly County Borough residents are eligible to win the cash prize providing they put their food waste recycling caddy out for collection.

Caerphilly County Borough Council currently offer a weekly food waste collection service to all 80,000 households, where the food waste is taken for a process called Anaerobic Digestion, which where it is turned into a source of renewable energy.

Mr and Mrs Roberts said: “We can’t believe we have won – it was such a shock to get a knock at the door.

“We have been recycling our food waste for as long as we can remember. We just don’t know why you wouldn’t. To us it is just food waste, but when you know that they can make it into something of use it’s clearly the right thing to do.”

Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Waste, Leisure & Green spaces said: “Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Roberts, and to all our previous winners of our ongoing Mash for Cash campaign.

“We are continuously looking for new and exciting ways to boost our recycling rates, and ensure we are meeting and exceeding the statutory targets set by Welsh Government and are honoured to be able to do this using initiatives like Mash for Cash, which reward our participating residents.

“Thanks to all those residents who are already participating in this weekly collection service, I encourage every to get involved to be in with a chance to win the next cash prize.”
