Barratt David Wilson Homes South Wales, has announced the launch of Afon Las — a new housing development in Cardiff, named by pupils from Ysgol Gynradd Groes-wen.
Located within Cardiff’s popular ‘Garden City’ development, Plasdŵr, the Barratt site’s Welsh language name translates to ‘blue river’ — a nod to the nature and green space surrounding the area.
Working closely with Barratt’s team, the school pupils — all aged between five to eight years old — took part in a creative workshop to name the development and design its final logo, which will feature on signage at the site entrance.
As a thank you for their hard work, the children were invited to the official unveiling of Afon Las — where they took part in a site safety session and enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of the construction area.
PPA Teacher at Ysgol Gynradd Groes-wen, Sioned Tiplady, said: “The children were very excited to be involved in the naming and logo design for Afon Las. They were drawn to the name because it sounded peaceful and welcoming — like the kind of place they’d want to live themselves.
“The development will welcome many new families and children to the Plasdŵr estate — many of whom will go on to attend our school, which is just a short walk away. So, it feels fitting that our pupils have helped to shape its identity and played a part in its future”.
The initiative forms part of Barratt David Wilson Homes’ commitment to community engagement and education, giving local children the chance to contribute meaningfully to the development’s identity — while learning about safety and sustainability in housebuilding.
The development, which will offer a range of three and four-bedroom homes, will provide the best of both worlds — combining open, green surroundings within easy reach of Cardiff city centre.
What’s more, the properties at Afon Las have been designed with energy efficiency and sustainability in mind — with features like photovoltaic solar panels helping to make them up to 65% more energy-efficient than older properties*. Over time, this could provide potential savings of up to £979** per year on household bills.
