Cardiff University to celebrate Pride 2023

Gina Dunn, President of Cardiff Students’ Union

Cardiff University and Cardiff Students’ Union are proud to be taking part and supporting Cardiff’s most colourful event of the year, Pride Cymru 2023.

Throughout February, Cardiff Students’ Union celebrated LGBTQ+ History Month and engaged with over 500 students by hosting multiple events such as film and book clubs, pride showcases, introduced guest speakers to talk about their stories and held stalls across campus to educate students about sexual health; but these celebrations don’t stop here.

Pride Cymru is one of the most colourful days of the year in the Capital, being a volunteer-led charity that works to promote the elimination of discrimination of sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or ability.

Gina Dunn, President of Cardiff Students’ Union, said “I’m so pleased that Cardiff University and the Students’ Union will be attending, and parading at, Pride Cymru 2023. It is amazing to see how much support this incredible event has received in the past, and it’s so important that we represent our students and staff – past, present and future.”

There is still work to be done to improve the experience of our LGBTQ+ Students but attending Pride Cymru 2023 is a huge step in the right direction.”

Cardiff University’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Colin Riordan, said: “This is an exciting first for Cardiff University’s LGBTQ+ community. Our staff and students have a long and proud tradition of supporting Pride Cymru – especially the annual parade. With the University and the Students’ Union coming together as partners for the first time, we will be officially represented under one Cardiff University banner at Pride Cymru 2023. This sends a clear message that as a University we are united in our determination to recognise, celebrate, and defend our LGBTQ+ community.”

Cardiff University and Cardiff Students’ Union are delighted to be a part of the Pride Cymru 2023 parade, as diversity and inclusion is at the heart of what Cardiff Students’ Union does. The organisational vision is clear: to work with every Cardiff student to enhance their University experience. The Students’ Union and the University are committed to supporting, developing and promoting equality and diversity in all practices and activities.

Pride Cymru’s Big Weekend has become a family-friendly community event, enabling diverse groups to come together and find out more about one another and the matters that affect the LGBTQ+ community.

Pride Cymru will be taking place in Cardiff on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th June.
