Christmas Comes Early for £100K Tewkesbury Winner Who Celebrated with Extra Naan Bread

A Tewkesbury mother convinced her daughter of her £100k National Lottery Scratchcard win by taking her out for a curry dinner – and ordering Naan bread with it as a celebratory treat!

Mandy Carter (52), was having trouble convincing her daughter Hannah (22), of her windfall, until she suggested going out for dinner – which they rarely do – and then encouraged her to order whatever she fancied.

Mandy, who has had a particularly challenging few months at work as a Dementia Carer, handed in her notice shortly after her top prize win on the life-changing £100,000 Christmas Countdown scratchcard. She is looking forward to three months’ ‘time out’ to take stock and have a little time to herself.

“This couldn’t have come at a better time for us,” says Mandy; who bought the winning scratchcard with the £2 winnings from another scratchcard. “It was the last Christmas Countdown scratchcard left and was just visible in the stand, so I thought it must be worth a go.

“Wednesday also marked a year since my Dad passed away and I truly think he is watching down on me. The clutch had gone on Hannah’s 12-plate Kia on Monday, so we’ve been able to have that fixed straight away and have both had our cars valeted as the first of many treats – along with the lovely curry we had out!

“We rarely eat out as I’m usually working late hours, but Hannah didn’t believe I had won, until I arranged for us to eat out and showed her the scratchard. She then asked, ‘Can I have a Naan with my curry then?’”

Mandy is also planning a family holiday to Tenerife in the New Year with Hannah, her mum Marilyn, her younger sister Karen and her brother in law and nephew.

“The biggest relief has been to be able to pay off debts and bills for both me and Hannah – that is a wonderful feeling. I’ve never been a big spender and am not a frivolous person. I can’t imagine ever being interested in designer purchases, but to be able to start over with a clean slate feels just fabulous. This win gives me peace of mind and that’s priceless.”

Mandy bought her winning £100,000 Christmas Countdown scratchcard at Morrisons, Tewkesbury. There is a 1 in 4 overall chance of winning a prize on the £100,000 Christmas Countdown scratchcard. The card costs £2 and prizes range from £2 up to the top prize of £100,000.

The National Lottery changes the lives of winners like Mandy as well as communities across the UK – players raise, on average, around £30 million for National Lottery-funded projects every week.
