Wales set for cold, cloudy end to December with frost and wintry showers on the way

Wales is expected to see a largely dry but chilly spell of weather through the end of December, with cloud dominating for many and the best of any sunshine staying mainly in the west, according to the Met Office.

The forecast covers the period from Monday 29 December through to Friday 2 January, with colder conditions becoming more noticeable as the New Year approaches.

    Today Monday

It will remain rather cloudy across much of Wales, although western areas will see the brightest conditions. Cloud will be thick enough over higher ground for some patchy drizzle at times, but most places will stay dry. Winds will be fairly light, though it will still feel cold following a chilly start to the day. Temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of around 7°C.

    Tonight

Cloud will continue through the evening, with some light and patchy rain drifting south overnight. Conditions will then turn drier and colder, with clearer spells developing and a touch of frost in places. Temperatures are expected to fall to around minus 1°C.

    Tuesday

Tuesday will begin largely cloudy, with some rain lingering over hills and higher ground. Through the afternoon, brighter conditions will develop, bringing sunny spells and light winds. It will remain cold, with maximum temperatures around 6°C.

    Outlook for Wednesday to Friday

New Year’s Eve is expected to be cold and frosty, with sunny spells during the day. Conditions then turn more unsettled into New Year’s Day, with showery rain arriving and an increased risk of wintry showers. It will feel colder and breezier as the week goes on.

People heading out for New Year celebrations are advised to keep an eye on local forecasts, especially with frost and possible wintry showers likely to affect travel in some areas.
